Things I really use: Makeups

Hello everyone!

Sometimes I get questions like, "Do you actually use all the products you review on your blog?". Why is it that everything you review are nice? Well, I haven't come to the bad reviews yet. Anyway, some stuff are nice to use, but I can only afford to use one thing at a time. How many foundation can you use at one time?

So, I'm starting this series called "Things I really use" to introduce to you guys the products that I use on a daily basis. I will cover body, hair, skincare, and today it's all about the makeups that I frequent.

I used to have tonnes of makeups sitting on my vanity. At the end of the day, I learn that I only use a couple of stuff and had my vanity spring cleaned. I have past my experimental stage in makeups and no longer as adventurous as last time when I use to buy loud colors and weird stuff that I don't need. So now I left with all these necessities that I use daily.

(1) Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 is a really great product. This is my third tube and I'm going into the fourth. It evens out your skintone, very lightweight and feels like you're wearing a regular moisturizer. It gives you that skin that you never thought you could own. Because of it is more like a moisturizer, it stays on your skin hydrated throughout the entire day. When I need something stronger to cover up my imperfection, I will use the (2) M.A.C. Pro Longwear SPF 10 Foundation. I wouldn't say this is the best foundation, but NC30/25 is my color. I tried to switch to other foundation but I couldn't find any brand that has the color that blends perfectly with my skintone. At the moment, the Pro Longwear will do just fine.

I use the (3) M.A.C. Mineralize Skinfinish Natural on the days that I look pale. And I also contour my cheek with it whenever I know I will be photographed. You know how photos make you look like you're 10 pounds heavier? This trick works well to tone down that fattening effect cameras have on me.

I'm not very picky with my mascara. I use whatever I can find. For the purpose of photographing, I've chuck the (4) Revlon Photoready 3D Volume into the picture because I love the wand. I have a lot of other mascaras as well, but really..... I just use whatever I can grab. But the thing that I'm picky about is my brushes. So far I find (5) M.A.C. Makeup Brushes are the most awesome ones. They're not cheap, but you can save up a lot money when they have it in sets. Don't miss out the 217 blending brush. It's the best investment I ever had.

(6) NARS blush has been my favorite (Review here and here). For a perfect eyebrow, I use (7) Too Cool For School 1 Day Tatoo Eye Brow (Review here). The most convenient eyeliner I'm using now is (8) Kiss Me Heavy Rotation Perfect Liquid Eyeliner (Review here). It is really easy to handle and works well for me when I need a perfect winged eyeliner.

I think I've mention this before, I love the (9) Urban Decay Naked Basics palette (Review here). I have past my "experimental" stage in makeups and I'm pretty comfortable with having just the basic colors of eyeshadow. This palette is such a staple item right now. I use it to fill my eyebrow, to highlight my nose, chin and forehead and also as, what it supposedly be... an eyeshadow.

And lastly, the only product which I'm guilty of splurging is (10) M.A.C. Cremesheen Lipsticks. And again, I wouldn't say M.A.C. lipsticks are the best, I personally think Chanel lipsticks are much better.... M.A.C. has better choice of colors. I love the shade Blankety which is a nude and Ravishing which is an orange. I alternate my lipsticks all the time. These are just the ones that I put inside my handbag. But I often leave the house with my Etude House Dear My Jelly Lips Talk.

*************

I hope you all like what I share today. If you have any questions on the products that I use or anything related to what I've shared above, do leave a comment. I shall answer you from there. The "Things I really use" series will continue next week, and I shall share with you all my hair products.

[Review] Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S. Morning Eye Rescue from Organic Grape Water

We all know that grapes are super good for our skin. Well, it is a common fact. But how is it good to our skin? Grapes contains high concentration of antioxidant that prevent oxygen-related enzymes from becoming overreactive. This means that the antioxidant component in grapes help slows down aging process. Eating grapes is definitely a way to consume the nutrients from it. But let's face it, how many tonnes of grapes can you eat without getting bored of it? It is much easier to just apply it on your face don't you think?

Thankfully, Caudalie just launched the S.O.S Morning Eye Rescue. This eye cream is an addition to Caudalie Vinosource line.

What it is?
The eye product that moisturizes, soothes and decongests the fragile eye area in a single gesture. Its tailored, oil-free formula is highly natural (92% of natural origin ingredients) provides a trio of exclusive Caudalie ingredients from the vine and grape. The organic grape water is full of natural active substances. It contains trace elements that reduce skin hyper-reactivity, plus polysaccharides (intelligent sugars), that capture and preserve water inside cells to maintain optimum moisturization. An increase of 127% of hydration and a 61% reduction of skin sensitivity have been observed in clinical tests with volunteers. The results of Organic Grape Water on the skin have been the subject of a scientific publication in the British journal, Cosmetic Science Technology.

I've tried this product for the past 3 weeks and so far it is doing fine. Although there is no obvious improvement in terms of dark circles and fine lines, but my eye areas are definitely feel more hydrated.

Main ingredients:
White tea, Destran Sulfate and Red Vine

Pros:

1. It gives that "fresh look" around the eyes instantly. Prevent your eyes looking tired and dull.

2. Eliminates sensitivity around the eye areas such as redness. Hopefully it will reduce my dark circles, but at this moment can't tell just yet.

3. Concentrated and high level of antioxidant content that will prevent aging around the eyes.

4. Unlike other eye creams that contains fillers, Caudalie only uses natural ingredients. Fillers do give fast results, but they're only temporary, the results don't last and may cause side effects. However, Caudalie's ingredients are natural active ingredients that treat the skin problem from the inside.

5.  The texture is silky smooth.

6. Doesn't cause eye seeds because it contains no oil particles.

7. Reasonably priced at RM90 each tube which may last you for 3 months.

Cons:

It may be a bit hard to shop for Caudalie products as they are only available at Kens Apothecary BV2 and Empire Shopping Gallery. Other than that, the product itself is really amazing that I can't think of any bad thing to mention.

Caudalie also has their own spa which uses Vinotherapy that combines the virtues of naturally warm spring water, rich in minerals and trace elements drawn from more than 540 meters underground, with the latest scientific findings on the benefits of the vine and grapes. Our Vinotherapists’ expert hands will lavish you with exceptional treatments using Caudalie products with anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties. Unfortunately it is not available in Malaysia :(

[Review] The Very First Scalp & Hair Serum in the World... Kerastase Initialiste

I know you're familiar with face/skincare serum. But have you heard of scalp and hair serum before? I bet you don't. Unless you're a Kerastase fan. Recently, Kerastase launched the very first scalp and hair serum that powered by stem-cells research.

What is stem-cells research? It is a scientific research technology where biological cells are used in medicine (in this case, in the serum) to promote regeneration of cells when used on our body. Kerastase Initialiste stem cells are formulated with a native plant cell complex which contains a green tea extract that has demonstrated its ability to help protect the environment of the hair roots.

Application is directly onto the scalp by using the pipette on toweled dry hair. All you need is 2 doses from the pipette for 3 times a week. It is alright if you want to apply it on dry hair, but research shows that the scalp has better absorption power when it is damp.

Pros:

1. Easy to use. Leave on application.
2. Fast result. Within 2 weeks, you will experience less hair fall. The amount of fall out when I was washing hair is obviously lesser now.
3. Technically, you will also experience healthier scalp. But so far it is very hard to tell.
4. Non-greasy feeling. Absorbs really fast.

Cons:

1. Expensive. RM180 per bottle which will last you for one and half month.
2. Only available in certain hair saloons that carries Kerastase.
3. It is hard to apply uniformly throughout the whole head. Sometimes I'm not sure if the back of my head gets it. Maybe the way I apply it is not expert enough.

I really love the texture. Unlike other hair products, which comes in mousse, cream or spray, the Initialiste comes in serum texture. It absorbs really fast.

Oh, did I mention that it smells super great. It has a very familiar refreshing smell, which I later found out it smells exactly like the Benefit B.Right moisturizer!!!

If you want a healthier hair from inside out, you should try the Initialiste. Within two weeks you will see less of hair fall out. And by a month, your hair texture will be less coarse and easier to manage.

Bag of Love April 2013

This is sooooooo lag! We're going into June in few days time and here I am talking about the April Bag of Love. Anyway, my BFF, you all know her as Lady Alie, bought this for me. I didn't intend to subscribe any more beauty box because I am saving my money to buy a house. You see, I spend so much money on beauty products and now I have overflowing of makeups, skincare, nail polish, etc. all over the place, but I don't have a house to keep them. A big thank you to Alie for giving this Bag of Love to me. I really love all the stuff inside (except the Nuxe Brightening BB Cream).

Here's a quick review of what's inside....

1. The Body Shop Quiet Night Dream Pillow & Body Mist, 100ml, RM59
My baby loves this. I spray on them everynight before we sleep. It has a very strong lavender/camomile scent. It is really calming and soothing. Sadly, the scent don't last too long. I think it only last about 2 hours max.

2. Phytojoba Intense Hydrating Shampoo, 200ml, RM88
I haven't tried this yet, so I don't know if it is good. However, this is a product which I'm not so keen on trying. I'm pretty comfortable with my Kerastase shampoo.

3. Nuxe Brightening BB Cream SPF30/PA+++, 30ml, RM120
I've been seeing a lot of people rave about Nuxe, but I have not tried any of their products except this one. The BB Cream is more of a tinted moisturizer than a BB Cream. And it doesn't provide enough coverage. Nonetheless, the sun screen protection is quite high.

4. Definite Contour Brush, Full size, RM88
This is by far the most useful product in the bag. The bristles are soft and stiff. It is one of those brush that you would love for edgy contouring.

5. Burt's Bees Richly Replenishing Cocoa & Capuacu Butters Body Lotion, 170ml, RM62.80
Burt's Bees products are no doubt very good, but the product sample size is really small. I think it is enough for only 1 application.

6. Decleor Hydra Floral Moisturising Cream, 50ml, RM271
It also comes with a Decleor Signature Aromaplasty Facial voucher. Decleor is also one of those beauty brand that I never thought I would want to try. Well, it is good to have it here in the bag. Now I can try if it's worth the price 'cos everything from Decleor is so expensive.

As for the bag....

This is made of bleach-free canvas. Though delicate, the bad is extremely heavy-duty.

I'm quite happy with the content of this Bag of Love that I received from Alie. However, my concern is, how many bags would you like to receive before you get sick of it? As for the normal box, I can put my junks in it and keep it in my storage. What to do with the bag, I really don't know.

Bag of love is RM39.90 each month. You can subscribe it HERE.

GLOW by Dr. Brandt Ruby Crystal Retinol Hydracreme

In the beginning I didn't believe that ruby has its benefit in skincare. Yes, I'm talking about the precious stone ruby. Apparently, ruby lasers are one of the most powerful lasers for eradicating skin imperfections. Dr. Brandt performs this procedure on his patients who have concern with dull, uneven skin tone and texture in his clinic. Red light rays, emitted from the ruby lasers, are absorbed by the skin cells to allow them to regenerate faster, revealing a fresh healthy layer or skin with a luminous healthy glow.

The problem is, the ruby laser procedure is expensive, and you will have to travel all the way to Dr. Brandt's office in the US. But now you can experience the similar treatment with the new GLOW by Dr. Brandt. It is an instant illuminating moisturizer that inspired by Dr. Brandt's in-office ruby laser procedure. The day & night moisturizer is formulated with skin illuminators, optical diffusers and micronized ruby crystals to transform light into energy providing a smoother, more even look and a healthy glowing complexion.

Pros:

1. Boosts skin's ability to reflect light.
2. Minimizes the look of lines & wrinkles.
3. Improves skin texture & tone.
4. Promotes radiance & glow.
5. Restores optimal hydration.
6. Easy to use.
7. Can be used underneath makeups.
8. Reveals new skin by stimulating cell turnover.

Cons:

1. The day cream does not come with SPF. You need to use another product that has SPF on top of it.
2. Expensive. Well, it is Dr. Brandt, so it is still acceptable.

I've been using the day & night cream religiously since 10th May until now. So it's been 2 weeks. It's quite hard to see any improvement in such a short period of time. But I must admit that my old acne scars are getting lighter. In terms of hydration and fine lines, I can't tell because I have pretty well hydrated skin by drinking a lot of water. And I don't really have obvious fine lines on my face.

The launch of GLOW by Dr. Brandt was held in Selberan few weeks ago. I was quite confused why a skincare brand would have their event in a jewelry show room. Later I realized that Selberan is celebrating their 40th anniversary and the anniversary stone is actually ruby, which is also one of the ingredient in Glow.

Selberan released the Petit Rococo Ruby collection inspired by the elegant and eye catching Selberan Rococo Reimagined collection launched at the end of 2012. The 18th century ornate, decorative style featuring asymmetric compositions with natural motifs and sensuous curves is translated into a charming and feminine range of jewellery made in 18k white and yellow gold, now accented with specially selected, fiery red rubies and diamonds.

Rubies in jewelries are pretty common. But it is my first time experiencing rubies in my skincare. It gives me that luxury factor everytime I put them on my skin. And it is also quite surprising that the micronized rubies are able to transform light into a natural energy that can break dark pigments on the skin, as well as encouraging skin cell growth. Layers of fresh skin cells are able to surface faster with regular application of Glow.

If you're looking for skincare that encourage new skin growth, this is the product you should go after. I think it does it's job by revealing fresh new skin as I can see my old acne scars are getting lighter and lighter.

Price: RM229
Available at Dr. Brandt (The Gardens, BSC, One Utama), Ken's Apothecary (Empire Shopping Gallery, BVII), Sephora (KLCC, Starhill, Paradigm Mall).

Canmake Haul & International Beauty Expo Event

Good Monday everyone! How was your weekend? Saturday was a laidback day for me. I met up with friends and discovered the bestest cupcake in Malaysia at Wondermilk. The salted caramel cupcake is the best!!!!! And Sunday was crazy for me. The mister broke his leg during his basketball game. At first I was worry sick, but when I saw him with his "tongkat" I couldn't stop laughing. That was before I attended the Canmake event at the International Beauty Expo.

Did anyone went to the expo? It is running until 21st May (Tuesday) at KLCC Convention Center. If you're free do drop by. There are plenty of beauty brands there. And if you're going, don't forget to visit Canmake booth in Hall 1.

These are the haul I'm going to show you all...

I was eyeing on the Marshmallow Finish Powder since the beginning I went to Canmake's counter. The packaging is so nice!!!!!

The Brown Eyeliner is something which I've been wanting to try. This is a multi-function product. You can even use it to fill in your brows.

Canmake is famous of their eyelashes. There are plenty of designs to choose from. The one that I got here is the straight-cross type.

I even have their bestseller, the Canmake Cream Cheek. This product has gotten a lot of praise from Japanese, Taiwanese and Hongkie beauty blogger. Now it's my turn to try it. Will let you all know if it's good.

The Canmake Powder Cheek Blush has micro glitters in it that will make your face shine bright like a diamond.

Of all of the products, I really can't wait to try out the Canmake Eyeshadow Base. I hardly put eyeshadow base and I really want to see if it makes any difference.

Any glitter eyeshadow fans here? You'll love the Canmake Four Shiny Eyes. The shimmer is really overpowering in these eyeshadows.

Also, the Canmake Colorful Nails. Although Canmake is not really famous of their nail polish, but they have pretty impressive color range. Their glittered nail polish is a bit underrated and they're pretty amazing on the nails.

Lastly, the Canmake Make Me Happy perfume. It smells light and refreshing. And the petite bottle with heart shape is sooooo cute!

I think all of you are pretty familiar with Canmake right? It has been in the market since 1985 and their products target teenagers and young office workers. With cute packaging like that, I think not just teenagers and young office workers are into it, even old lady like me got pretty attracted. Currently, Canmake has 37 counters in Malaysia. You can check it out from Sasa.

As I mentioned earlier, I got all these from Canmake's event in the International Beauty Expo. Canmake specially invited their in house makeup artists from Japan to share with us makeup tips on how to achieve the "kawaii" look.

The result is an innocent kawaii face...

This Spring 2013, the in trend makeup is a natural look, with some enhancement on the eyes area. This is how it suppose to look like.

I'm going to try this look tomorrow and see if I succeed.

The event was attended by other beauty bloggers as well. Everyone is busy playing with all the makeup products from Canmake. Can you spot anyone you know???

I really can't wait to try out all the stuff I got above. Is there any product which you want me to review? Please let me know.

Shopping Tips & Haul from Greece & Souvenir Pack Giveaway

Tadaima!!!!

OMG! I’m so freaking tired after a long haul flight and decided to blog a haul. Before that, I’ll give you all some shopping tips, just in case you’re traveling to Greece soon. Basically, the souvenir stuff is pretty generic and standardized throughout Greece. For example, whatever you want to buy from Santorini are available in Athens too, and vice versa. But there are certain things which are cheaper in certain places.

I will start with Santorini because that’s my first stop. There are two main tourist places in the island which is Fira and Oia. Fira is the “town” area and Oia is a pretty relax coastal village.

Rule number one, remember to bargain. If you’re going with friends/family, remember to buy all your souvenir in one place. That way, you can get better price when you’re buying in a huge quantity. We did that in a shop in Fira, Santorini and was able to get 10% off.

If you have the time, scout around to compare prices. I think I bought some stuff which is much more expensive in Fira and then found out it is much cheaper to buy in Oia. It is also cheaper to buy those “Greek goddess” dress in Santorini than in Athens, although Athens have much more choices.

Then in Athens, you should shop in the Roman Market, which located at the foot of Acropolis. You might get confused what to get for souvenir as there are plenty of choices from different shops there.

And here is my haul. Let’s start with the very typical souvenir…

I bought a handpainted curio box for Christine. I actually choose a very nice one for her, but they exchanged it with another one that looks quite crappy. Although both the box are the same painting, but the one I got has some handywork flaws. Lesson learnt, when shop for souvenir, hold on to your stuff before paying and check to see if it is what you wanted to get. The church model is for Alie and the fridge magnet is for my housemate who collects fridge magnet from different countries.

At Athens, I bought these…

The magnet totally broke in half. I was so devastated because it is for my housemate. If you’re going to buy those clay souvenir, remember don’t put it in your check in luggage. Or better still, don’t buy the clay souvenir. They’re so fragile. Just a little knock it will shatter. Luckily I bought another magnet of Athena figure for her. For myself, I got the Panthenon model for memories. It is one of those place you must visit before you die. Although ruined, it is still beautiful.

I bought a Lady Justitae figure to put on my office table. Sadly, the Lady’s got completely beheaded. I actually hand carried this figure, I think I must have knocked my backpack while carrying it inside. Now I have to find a way to fix it back and paint it. I’m thinking of painting it in pink.

I got these pretty expensive souvenir for mom. A handpainted tea cup from Santorini and an antique-like jewelry box from Athens. I really love the jewelry box and thinking of keeping it for myself.

Keychains, obligated to buy when travel.

Some local produce from Greece… the olive oil and honey. Greek’s olive oil is much sweeter than the Italian’s. It is perfect to eat with bread. And I’m not too sure about the honey though. I bought it for my aunt because I don’t know what else to get for her.

Santorini is famous of their white wine Nykteri. If you love sweet wine like Moscato, you’ll love this even more.

Also brought back some x-rated stuff. Hahahahahaha….. Must use Playboy centrefold as inspiration to work harder for nicer body!!!!

Lastly, some beauty related stuff. I think I’ve mention to you guys about the brand Korres before? My friend introduced this brand to me and I fell in love with it immediately. This brand is originated from Greece and it cost so much cheaper there. Initially I wanted to grab the whole store because it is really cheap. But I came to my senses and bought only the Guava Body Butter and the Milk Cleansing Wipe. The body butter is super good!!! I’ve been asking everyone to try this, so you should too. Don’t worry about flying to Greece. You can buy it from Luxola and they will send it directly to your doorstep.

Greece is really proud of their olives. Since I love olive in my skincare, I got all these…

The Peeling Soap Sponge is really cool. Basically it has few layers of sponges and the last layer is made of soap. You need to rub the soap part on your body to create foam and then use the sponge to exfoliate. This is the first time I see such thing. Bath bombs that made from olives. These are amazing!!! I tried the Olive with Olive Leaves already to distress myself from the long flight. It is superb! It leaves the skin thoroughly moisturized and all the rough skin on my feet are all gone after soaking myself in it for 20 minutes. And soap bar made our of 100% pure olive.

As part of the norm after my trip for you all. Ok… Not all, but only 1 person. 1 reader of this blog will receive a special souvenir pack from me. The souvenir pack contains:

1. One natural olive soap bar from Greece – they’re so good, I decided to give one away.
2. A L’Occitane travel pack that contains shower gel, shampoo/conditioner, and body lotion – this travel pack saves me a lot of space and really useful during my trip. I’m giving one set away so you can bring it for your next trip.

How to get this souvenir pack?
1. As usual, you have to be a subscriber of this blog. If you haven’t, click on the “Join this site” tab on the right hand side.
2. Comment below by leaving your email address. If you don’t leave your email then I will assume that you’re just commenting and don’t want the souvenir pack.
3. I will pick a random reader and send email to her on 23rd May (Thursday).

I want to go back to Santorini so badly! It’s so nice there and the view is nothing like what I’ve seen. OK… Now I’m getting my ass back to work, earn some money and plan for another trip again.
