[Makeup Basics] Choosing the right mascara

Makeup Basics is a weekly topic on this blog. The topic's aim is to help makeup rookie on how to get started. If you're interested in this topic, make sure to come back every week. There will be tips and product recommendations. If you have any useful tips and comment to share, don't forget to comment below.

So we have done foundations and eyeliner. This week, let's talk about mascara. The BIGGEST mistake when choosing a mascara is trusting what the product promise. Almost every mascara in the market promise you something - longer lashes, fuller lashes, separating your lashes, etc. From my personal experience (and also collective experiences from my friends), those promises were never fulfilled.

Choosing the perfect mascara can be a tricky one. It is as tricky as choosing the right foundation but it is less expensive and it doesn't hurt so much to throw away a mascara if you find you have purchased the wrong one. However, to save you the hassle, I will break down the selections so you can choose your mascara easier. The most important thing is to know how your eyelash grows and choose the right mascara wand. It is like finding the best comb for your hair, for example, if you have a curly hair, a flat comb probably won't work for you. Same goes to mascara and eyelashes.

The very first thing to do is to observe how your lashes grow. Are they:

a. Long, curved and full
b. Long but sparse
c. Short and full
d. Short and sparse
e. Mix of long and short
f. Growing criss-crossed

Then the second step is to choose the right wand for the type of lash that you have. Below are some of the wands that you can find:

1. This wand is perfect for longer lashes, but not lashes that grows criss-crossed. For shorter lashes, the wand may tend to make a mess on top of your lid because the surface area of the bristles is quite big. It might cause clumsiness when applying.

2. Notice that the bristles of the wand is extremely straight and it is made of rubber/plastic instead of brush? This type of wand is perfect for lashes that grow criss-crossed. It is also great for longer lashes, but not short lashes.

3. The hybrid wand is perfect for any type of lashes. To play safe, you can choose to buy the hybrid wand mascara, however it is not easy to find and may cost a bomb.

4. Similar to #2

5. The comb type of wand is suitable for shorter lashes. The comb helps to ease the application without making a mess. It is usable for longer lashes but no advisable because the comb won't be able to spread out the products and your long lash might feel heavy with the products collected on each strand.

6. The long-short bristles wand is good for lashes has mixture of long and short hair. The bristles are able to catch the different length of the lashes.

7. The thorn type of wand that made of plastic or rubber is the best wand for any lashes (in my opinion). However, the downside is the wand won't be able to pick up a lot of products, so you might have to coat your lashes more.

8. The ball-tip mascara is usually use to separate lashes and to coat the lower lash.

Besides choosing the right wand, the way you apply the mascara is also very important. A lot of people apply mascara with the zig-zag motion, where the wand goes left and right of the eyelash. This is a WRONG method. The zig-zag motion will create clumps on your eyelash and excessive product will stick to your lash. The CORRECT method is to comb your lash from the inside and the wand goes outward. Repeat until you get the desired amount of product coated on your lash. As you brush your lash outward, the wand will help push excessive product out of your lashes.

Having your lashes curled before applying mascara makes a huge difference. It elevates your lashes twice compared to using just mascara itself. NEVER curl your lashes after you have applied your mascara, unless you want your lashes to appear looking like it has an L shape. It looks weird, trust me.

If you tend to over comb your lashes and leave stains of mascara on top of you eyelid, apply eyeshadow on top of your lid first. Nude or skin color eyeshadow comes really handy in this situation. The eyeshadow works as a shield to protect your eyelid from getting messed up by the mascara. You can easily remove the stain by using tissue paper to wipe off the eyeshadow. Alternatively, you can use card or the specific tool to shield your eyelid from the mascara mess.

That's all for this week Makeup Basics tips. Let me know if it is useful. And if you have any mascara tips to share, please feel free to comment below. I always welcome new knowledge when it comes to beauty. Next week, let's talk about brushes.

New Arm Candy Must Have: Fossil Watches

These days accessories are becoming a must-have to complete an outfit, moreover when it is a functional accessories. A watch definitely plays an important role in portraying our personality (or personalities). This is why Fossil offers a wide range of amazing watch designs to cater different individual's taste and style.

Instead of the usual strap-on piece of watch on your wrist, mixing arm candy into your watch can bring out the fun and trendy side of your style. I will show you how you can achieve the look you want with these Fossil watches:

For a sweet and innocent feminine look, choose a watch with a slimmer strap such as the Rose Gold/Pink Georgia Mini Three Hand Stainless Steel watch. As for the arm candies, choose bracelets with similar slim body. Incorporate elements like pearl and diamantes for the added feminine feel.

If you're into a more mature and elegant look, the Silver Steel/Silver Virginia Three Hand Stainless Steel Fossil Watch is a perfect one. This watch is also suitable for work, corporate functions and formal events. Match it with alternate gold and silver arm candy. Your arm candy should be kept with minimal design so that it will bring out the details of the watch.

Casual style lovers, there are plenty of styles to choose from. You can even perk up your formal-looking watch into a casual look by matching it with a more casual arm candy. As for me, I love the Tortoise/Brown Stella Multifunction Resin Watch, there's something special about it that caught my eyes. For a boho look, I will match it with arm wrap, turquoise, beads and other arm candies with tribal elements.

When you browse through the Zalora site for Fossil watches, there are endless of styles you can choose from. Here are some of my favourite (wish I own them all)...

If you have been longing to get a new watch, why not check out ZALORA website for a wide range of Fossil watches selections online.

[Save or Crave] Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizing Cream vs Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream

Hey there! Here's another series on this blog. Let me introduce you to the Save or Crave topic where I will compare two products that very close to its functionality but very distinct in terms of the prices. That way you can decide whether to splurge or to save up your money and get the cheaper product. I find topic like this more helpful for you to make decision on which product to go for. Not to mention, sometimes it is just the branding that cost a lot, whereas you can get similar product for lesser money.

To start off, I will be comparing the Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizing Cream against the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream.

Hada Labo Kiehl's
Product description - Contains two excellent ingredients,
Hyaluronic Acid and Super Hyaluronic
Acid that deeply penetrates the skin
(epidermis) to nourish and helps
restore skin's barrier to prevent
moisture lost.

- Helps soften epidermis, leaving skin
smooth and hydrated.

- Light and non-greasy cream that
infuses your skin with continuous

- Skin pH balanced. Low irritation.

- Free of fragrances, mineral oil,
alcohol & colorant.
- Helps reduce moisture loss while
drawing and absorbing moisture
from the air.

- With continuous moisture
replenishment throughout the day,
leaves skin smooth, soft and
Texture Slightly stickier than Kiehl's but the
difference is super minute. A bit
thicker and you can feel it once you
spread it on your skin.
The cream feels melted into the
skin once applied on the face. The
texture is a bit watery.
Product efficacy Keeps face moisturized throughout
the day without any irritation. Skin
feels hydrated. To some people, there
might be a slight annoyance that the
product mixed up with the natural face
oil, it feels slightly stickier.
After a long wear (especially
when you apply it overnight), you
might feel that the product just
disappear and leaving your skin
bare. I didn't have that problem
with the Hada Labo product when
using overnight.
Price RM59.90 for 50g

(Approximately RM1.20 for 1g)
RM100 for 50g

(Approximately RM2.00 for 1g)

RM150 for 125g

(Approximately RM1.20 for 1g)

My comments:

When comparing moisturizer, I always wish I have the moisture level test machine to find out which product works better. In terms of efficacy, I wouldn't be able to tell which one gives better moisture without the machine. Both are equally good, according to my layman observation.

I've completely use up the Kiehl's UFC and enjoying the Hada Labo for now. At the same time, I went on to stock up the 125g Kiehl's UFC. I'm so indecisive which is better.

I find both of the products are very similar. Both have no fragrance, colour, alcohol, and mineral oil. And in terms of product efficacy, both do a very good job as well. If you blind-fold me, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, unless I get to touch the texture. The Hada Labo one is slightly thicker than the Kiehl's one. I love both of the products and if price isn't a factor, I wouldn't be able to pick a favourite.

In my humble opinion, if you don't wish to spend too much on a moisturizer, the Hada Labo one is pretty adequate. It is always nice to save some bucks for rainy days, moreover the Hada Labo one is almost half the price of Kiehl's. If you are lucky, you might bump into sales at Guardian or Watson that offer lower price. If you are looking for moisturizer for night use, Hada Labo is better choice because of the thicker texture.

On the other hand, Kiehl's one is nice to have if money is the least of your concern. Once a year Kiehl's will feature the bigger jar (125g) for only RM150 and the proceeds will go to charity. If you have the chance to grab the bigger jar, do purchase it for their charity drive. It might be an overrated campaign, but at least you know that your purchase will help someone that really needs the money. When I break it down per gram, the 125g jar cost about the same price as the Hada Labo one. If you are looking for moisturizer to keep you hydrated during the day, Kiehl's is a better option because of the watery texture.

Opinions are based on my own observation. It is up to your own decision which one you want to go for. Do comment below which one you would purchase and why.

Let me know if the "Save or Crave" post is useful. If it is I will do more of such post for other skincare, makeups and bath & body products too.

P/S: If you know where to get the moisture tester machine, do let me know. I'm desperately looking for one.

GUCCI Cosmetics Coming Soon...

Makeup lovers, good news for you. After Burberry, Tom Ford and Tory Burch, GUCCI follows suit to launch their own makeup line. The project took two years to realized. The luxury house initiated the project in 2010 and finally all the hardwork paid off. The complete makeup line is scheduled to launch in September 2014, but there's very little news about it.

The packaging is to die for. They're so sleek and posh. I'm really looking forward to own a lipstick and the mascara. Ultimately, I will be saving money for the face brush. It looks too gorgeous not to own it!

There is no official statement from GUCCI yet at this moment. So I'm not too sure what are the products that they are launching, how many colors, the price, etc. Let's just wait for awhile for the statement. There's also no news when it will arrive Malaysia. According to precedents, normally it takes about 6 months to arrive Malaysia after it is launched in the US.

What do you think about the GUCCI makeup collection? Are you excited or do you think this is just another branding gimmick? I'm actually pretty excited over the packaging and not so much on the products.

New Makeup Products Worth Trying

Hi girls... There are some new beauty products in the market that I think it is worth it to check out.

Lancome Swan Neck Mascara

A revolutionary mascara wand that gives you a perfect swipe on the eyelash. The wand is able to catch every strand of your eyelash without making a mess. If you're the type who has shaky hands when applying mascara, this can be your new best friend.

Urban Decay Naked 2 Basics

I was jumping in joy when I heard about the launch of the Urban Decay Naked 2 Basics (or is it Naked Basics 2?). I really love the first Naked Basics. I use it so often that the taupe and brown color are already hitting the pan. While I was still contemplating whether to get a new Naked Basics, I found out that there's already Naked Basics 2 in the market. Now I'm just waiting for it to arrive in Sephora in Malaysia.

The new Naked Basics has more gray tone. All the colors are wearable on a daily basis. I can see that this new palette will suit darker skin color better, as compared to the old Naked Basics.

Let me get it in hand first, then I'll do a full review on it.

O.P.I Gwen Stefani 2014 Holiday Collection

Each year O.P.I will launch a full collection of their Holiday colors. I was completely over the moon when I get to know that Gwen Stefani collaborated with O.P.I on this amazing collection. Last year it was Mariah Carey. In this year's collection, there are plenty of reds to choose from (red is Gwen's signature color). the collection is a classic Christmas color and will definitely set that festive mood. For a full swatch of the entire collection, go to The PolishAholic blog.

Benefit they're Real! push-up liner

This liquid eyeliner has a special tip that make application really easy. The slanted tip helps create winged cat eyeliner with a simple stroke. This is definitely on my shopping list. Any makeup product that allows me to save time is definitely worth to try out.

Those are some of the new products that I think worth your money to try out. Which of the products above appeal to you? My top of the list must try is the Naked 2 Basics. How about you?

After Menstrual Care - Pat Chan Soup

Today I'm not blogging about beauty, but this is a post that is pretty important for girls to read. A lot of you probably already know about pat chan soup that needs to be taken after our period cycle ends. If you don't know about it, you should read on. Pat chan is a mixture of herbs. You have to cook the soup and take it one or two days after your period stops.

Why you need to take pat chan soup?
During menstrual period, "dirty blood" may clogged on our fallopian tube and cause cyst. When you take pat chan, it works as a detox mainly to clean our fallopian tube. At the same time, it will restore the amount of blood lost during menstrual.

Where do you get the pat chan soup?
You can buy the herbs from Eu Yan Sang or Hai-O, but I would recommend you to buy it from ordinary chinese medical hall. The price difference is huge and the ingredients are the same. If you don't know how to pronounce it, just copy these words and hand it over to the uncle ----> 八珍. For simpler solution, you can load this blog post and show it to him on your mobile. LOL!

What are the ingredients?

One pack of the herbs can serve 2 person. If you have sister, you can share it with her. For serving of 2 person, prepare 2 hard boiled eggs.

How to prepare:

Step 1 - Cook 2 hard boiled eggs. I think it is not a rocket science to cook hard boiled eggs and I'm pretty sure all of you know how to do that.

Step 2 - Bring 1 litre of water to boil in a slow cooker. If you don't have a slow cooker, a normal pot will do.

Step 3 - Throw all the herbs into the pot and let it brew until the soup turns black. Let the ingredients boil at high heat for 15 minutes. Then lower down the fire to let it simmer for 30 minutes. When you lower down the fire, put the eggs into the pot.

This is what you will get at the end of the process...

I know it is not really that pleasant looking. And it does look like some concoction that an evil stepmother will cook to poison her stepchildren. But no, I'm not trying to poison you all. LOL! You can ask the chinese medical hall uncle to explain all the benefits. If you don't speak Chinese, you can go to the Chinese herbal shop in Paradigm Mall lower ground floor (same row as Delectable by Su), the owner is new generation Chinese medical hall uncle. He speaks very good English.

The pat chan soup is definitely halal. The ingredients are made of tree bark, tree root, prunes and leaf. It is 100% plant based.

If you are too lazy to prepare the soup, you can get it in the form of pills. I don't think every Chinese Medical Hall has it, but you can definitely get it from Eu Yan Sang.

What's In My Trash (vol.2)

Happy holiday girls! No Monday blues today eh? How did you spend your merdeka weekend, by the way? I was so lazy to make plans and wanted to just stay at home, so I decided to drop a blog post here...

The last time I did my What's In My Trash post, most of you said it is more helpful than individual review post. In this post, I will show you what's in my trash (duh!). These are products that I completely used up or products that not worth to keep, that I decided to discard them. I will include a mini review on each of the products.

#1 - L'Oreal Paris Nutri-Gloss Light Shine Shampoo

I've always been a fan of L'Oreal Paris shampoo. I personally think that the L'Oreal drugstore shampoo works better than the saloon exclusive range. This particular shampoo claims that it will restore shine back to dull hair. I don't think it works, but it definitely prevented my hair from falling during shampoo. Yes, I will repurchase this.

#2 - Ma Cherie Decoration Keep Spray for Hair

This hairspray is good for holding curls (not perms). When you curl your hair using the heat thong, the curl last about 2-3 hours. But when you apply this hairspray, the curls will last for 4-5 hours. It is lightweight and soft. The plus point for this hair spray is the pleasant smell. I don't think I will repurchase this because I hardly curl my hair, but I definitely recommend this to all of you who curl your hair often.

#3 - Etude House Nail Polish Remover

I think I have been showing this for a few times in my post. This is a product that I can't live without because the removing strength is so powerful that it can remove glittered nail polish with just one swap. If you're going to try it make sure you get the purple one. The pink one is not that great.

#4 - Cellnique Skin Action Sebum Gel

I love love love love love this product. Although it claims to remove sebum, I feel that it removes all impurities from my pores. What it does is it slowly elevates the impurities from deep in the skin to the surface. I use very little amount every night. And when I need to do extraction, I use generous amount for 3 nights before my extraction day. If you have clogged pores or want a clear skin, this is one of the must-have product. I'm on my second bottle now. And I can't see myself living without it.

#5 - Dove Intense Repair Conditioner

This is one of my staple product in the bathroom. I'm not sure whether I will strongly recommend it, this is the product that nice to have for everyday use. That's all.

#6 - Oslee Honey Sugar Mask

This is not the full size packaging. I got this sample from PR that send over Oslee products. I really love this mask (and my housemate crazy over it). It's an exfoliating mask. The exfoliating agent is made of sugar that slowly dilutes into your skin. It scrubs off your skin without damaging it and further refining the texture. Do grab a bottle to try if you can find it in Guardian.

#7 - Sara Happ Lip Slip

I hate hate hate hate this product. I think this is the stickiest lip gloss/balm that I've ever tried it my life. It sticks to my lips like glue and it is hard to wash off. No, don't spend your hard earned money on this product. I'm sure there are plenty of other lip balm that works much better. Further reading <<here>>.

#8 - Cellnique Ultimate Calming and Hydrating Airy Masque

This mask is pretty special. There are three layers to this mask, you have to use the middle section. The part where it comes in contact with your skin will moisturize your skin. Meanwhile, the top layer will absorb oxygen into the mask. If you have seriously dull and dehydrated skin, this mask helps speed up the recovery process. This is a definitely must-have for girls who are on travel vacation or busy women that have no time for skin pampering.

#9 - Benefit Confessions of a Concealaholic

I had this for a long time but reluctant to throw it because the packaging is so nice. This set has all the Benefit's concealer in one box, after trying it out, I decided that Boi-ing 02 is a good investment. I didn't finish the other concealer because they don't suit me at all. If you want to try out different products from Benefit before buying the full size, they have a lot of sets like this for you to try out.

#10 - Yadah Anti Trouble Spot

This product is for treating acne. I didn't finish it because very little amount of product needed per application, and also I hardly have acne these days. Normally it takes about half a month for acne to subside but when I apply this, it takes about 5 days for the acne to fade. Note, it doesn't prevent acne scars though. This is one of those emergency product to keep, just in case. But definitely not a must-have. I will only repurchase this when my acne problem returns.

#11 - Benefit It's Potent Eye Cream

I had this in full size before, but I hated it. After a long long time, I got this sample. I thought I will give it a second chance and try out the sample. I must say, I still don't like it. It does nothing to my eye area and that render a no-comment comment from me.

#12 - Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation

This is another product that I hate and will never repurchase. The texture is super thick that I felt like my skin couldn't breathe. It is hard to remove. After I wash my face 3 times, I still see some residue of foundation on my skin. I think I only use it for 3 times because I bought the wrong shade and Sephora didn't allow me to return the product even though it was their staff that recommended the shade to me. This is a major waste of money.

#13 - Crabtree & Evelyn Gardeners Hand Cream

The Gardeners hand cream from Crabtree & Evelyn is much thicker than other hand cream in Crabtree. It smells like Chinese medical shop, which I super love. I personally don't spend so much on a hand cream, but I keep this one for traveling or whenever I need extra pampering for my hands. By the way, the Iris one is not bad too.

#14 - Shills Miracle-Lift Body Contour Control for Stubborn Cellulite Control

No miracle at all. I use it below my butt cheek and upper thigh. Waste of money, waste of time with this product. Don't bother to try it... Nuff said.

#15 - L'Occitane Immortelle Brightening Moisture Cream

If you have the urge to spend a little bit extra on face moisturizer, go for this. It smells like heaven (not that I've been to heaven, but you get what I mean). And the cream texture is so light, it spreads on your skin like butter. I can't tell if the moisturizing effect is much better than other moisturizer, but it does the job well enough to be a keeper. If I have the extra cash to spend on beauty product, I will definitely get this in full size.

#16 - Benefit "that gal"

Before this I tried to save money by not buying makeup primer because I thought that I can apply moisturizer as a base. I was wrong. I learn that skincare tends to absorb into the skin. When you apply foundation on top of moisturizer, the products mix up and get absorbed into the skin. That's how you get clogged pores. So I switch to "that gal" as my base. I love that it smooths out the face texture and my foundation covers my skin nicely. Most face primers are silicone base, but this isn't. If you have been using moisturizer as your makeup base, it is time you switch to this.

#17 - Body Shop Seaweed Mattifying Moisture Lotion

Looking for matte moisturizer for day but never gotten a real matte one? Here's the one you need to try. Normally matte moisturizer don't provide enough hydration, but this product wouldn't have that problem. It stays matte for a long time. Will definitely purchase this again when all my moisturizer runs out.

#18 - SK-II Facial Treatment Clear Lotion

I got this sample from the Pitera set that I bought. I kept this for my travel because the size is just nice. This toner is simply fantastic, but the price can be a set back. The product is wonderful in many ways - if you're not into the Facial Treatment Essence, the toner can be a substitute. If I have no financial concern, I will probably stock it up for daily use.

#19 - Bare Minerals Ready SPF20 Foundation

I got this sample from Sephora. Not a fan of this foundation. It feels powdery when applied. And it doesn't provide even coverage, looks blotchy and cakey. I can't see it improving my skin any way - no coverage, uneven and dry. A total failed product for me.

That's all folks! I'll start collecting my trash products again. Stay tune for more What's In My Trash post.
