Penang Vegan Cafe: Wholey Wonder @ Hin Bus Depot

Wholey Wonder gives me a vibe of Tasmania’s vegan cafe which is rustic and hippies. Albeit the cafe is very casual and laidback, the food quality is uncompromising. The cafe is managed by the same group as Pinxin Vegan Cuisine, they use top quality ingredients and the food is made from passionate vegan chefs. While Pinxin targets family and skewed towards Asian cuisine, Wholey Wonder takes another approach where it is more Westernized.

This cafe takes a holistic approach to promote a healthy lifestyle. Not only it is a vegan cafe, but the second floor is also a yoga studio. The less-active me is here for the food only. But if you are interested, the yoga studio is open for everyone. Do ask the waiter for more info on the yoga schedule.

Location: 61, Jalan Gurwada, 10300 George Town, Penang (Waze: Hin Bus Depot)
Business hour: Opens daily (except Monday), 11:00AM - 9:00PM
Delivery option: GrabFood
Price range: RM9-RM30

When I arrived, I was greeted with this homemade kombucha tea on the house. It's so refreshing on a hot day. It is quite hard to pick an order because everything looks good on the menu. The cafe takes pride on the quality ingredients that used in their food such as superfoods are incorporated in their food and drinks whenever possible, the ingredients are locally sourced to ensure freshness, everything is made from scratch and natural sweeteners (such as banana and dates) are commonly used in the food.

I had the Poke Bowl as a starter. It has toasted pineapple and watermelon, zucchini noodle, red cabbage and carrot, sprinkled with sesame seeds and sunflower seeds. The toasted pineapple and watermelon is really addictive.

For the mains, I had the Naked Burger. The patty is not a mock-meat like other vegan restaurants would do. They actually made the patty with chickpeas from scratch. Also, the portobello mushroom, substituting the buns, gives a perfect balance of texture to the burger. I highly recommend you try this. I think even a non-vegan would love this. Did I mention, it comes with a generous amount of toasted tempeh on the side?

To share, we had the Wholey Pizzoli Pizza, where the crust is made from sourdough. I think the pizza taste averagely good, it doesn't deliver that wow-factor like the Naked Burger. One possibility is because I find the sauce too overwhelming. It is not mustard, by the way. And also, it is a bit dry with the tempeh as the main ingredient on the pizza.

There is a small corner in the cafe dedicated to selling zero waste essentials. If you are looking for reusable straws, shopping net, etc. you can purchase them here.

I'd probably come back to this cafe again because of its strategic location. The cafe is located at the outer ring of the Hin Bus Depot. After strolling around the weekend market, it's nice to drop by the cafe for some coffee and snacks.
